The ASR XL Acetabular System was developed by Johnson & Johson unit DePuy Orthopaedics, which offered patients a greater range of motion and stability due to its larger metal bearing instead of the tradional use of small femoral heads. Health professionals have argued that metal bearings used in these types of devices cause problems for patients, including pain, swelling, problems walking, loosening of the implant, fracture of the hip bone, and dislocation of the implant, as well as additional medical problems associated with their use.
The FDA issued a recall on two products, ASR XL Acetabular System (a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement surgery) and ASR Hip Resurfacing System (a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur)—both of which have been used in hip replacement surgery.
